A heat pump is a means of transporting heat from one place to another -from outdoors, to inside a home where it is useful.
Although heatpumps do run on electricity, they are able to generate many times more units of heat than use in electrical power, and can be 300%, 400% or even 500% efficient, as a result.
This is substantially better than even the most modern and efficient gas or oil boiler, and heatpumps also produce significantly less carbon emissions than other types of heating system available.
